Unit Requirements

As being part of a 4-H horse club, each member and horse combination are put into a certain level at which the rider and horse will improve in.

Unit 1

Similar to former unit 2A

1) Equitation
    Member to demonstrate the following:
    *     Mount, transitions from walk to halt and walk to jog/trot to walk.
    *     Explain aids for backing a horse and demonstrate at least two steps.
    *     Complete a pattern, including tack check, mount and dismount.   
    *    Activities as designated by the leader to substitute for one or more of the above or as an additional requirement.

2) Halter and Showmanship
    Member will be scored on fit and condition of the horse showing at halter, ability to answer questions related to horse husbandry and/or activities as designated by the leader.
    *    Tie haltered horse safely with correct quick release knot, tack up horse (those members who are too small to lift the saddle onto the horse may have assistance).

 

Unit 2


Similar to former unit 2B

1) Equitation
    Member to demonstrate the following:
    *    Demonstrate correct diagonals at the trot.
    *    Demonstrate transition from a jog/trot to a lope/canter at ringmaster’s command.
    *    Mount, start horse at walk, move into a jog/trot and lope/canter at ringmaster’s command.
    *    Stop and back at least four steps.
    *    Complete a pattern, including tack check, mount and dismount.    
    *    Activities as designated by the leader to substitute for one or more of the above or as an additional requirement.

2) Halter and Showmanship
    Member will be scored on fit and condition of the horse showing at halter, ability to answer questions related to horse husbandry and/or activities as designated by the leader.

Unit 3

Similar to former units 3A & 3B

1) Equitation
    Member to demonstrate the following:
    *     Riders to change diagonals at the trot.
    *     Transitions at specific markers from walk to lope/canter on the correct lead to jog/trot to halt.
    *     Stop and back at least six steps.
    *     Turn on the forehand in both directions with pivot foot kept quite constant.
    *     Figure 8 at walk and jog/trot.
    *     Complete a pattern, including tack check, mount and dismount.    
    *    Activities as designated by the leader to substitute for one or more of the above or as an additional requirement.

2) Halter and Showmanship
    Member will be scored on fit and condition of the horse showing at halter, ability to answer questions related to horse husbandry and/or activities as designated by the leader.

 

Unit 4

Similar to former units 4A & 4B

1) Equitation
    Member to demonstrate the following:
    *    Lengthened/extended jog/trot - Western sitting or rising, English rising.
    *    Execute two serpentine's at a jog/trot (Riders to be on the correct diagonal).
    *    Transitions - walk to lope/canter to walk.
    *    Leg yield in both directions at the walk.
    *    Turn on forehand, pivot foot kept within a one-metre circle.
    *    Demonstrate a side pass with at least three crossovers in each direction.
    *    Turn on haunches, pivot foot kept within a one-metre circle.
    *    Make two correct figures of eight at a lope/canter using a simple lead change.
    *    Complete a pattern, including tack check, mount and dismount.    
    *    Activities as designated by the leader to substitute for one or more of the above or as an additional requirement.

2) Halter and Showmanship
    Member will be scored on fit and condition of the horse showing at halter, ability to answer questions related to horse husbandry and/or activities as designated by the leader.

 

Unit 5

Similar to former unit 5A

1) Equitation
    Member to demonstrate the following:
    *     Transitions - Halt to lope/canter to halt and back.
    *     Haunches-in at walk.
    *     Jog/trot and walk to lope/canter transitions in both directions.
    *     Collected walk, jog/trot and lope/canter.
    *     Shoulder-in of at least three strides in both directions.
    *     Turn on forehand in both directions.
    *     Left and right side-pass of at least six fluid crossovers.
    *     Turn on haunches from halt or forward motion.
    *     Simple lead changes at the lope/ canter in two figure 8’s, two serpentines, and four diagonal line changes.   
    *     Complete a pattern, including tack check, mount and dismount.   
    *    Activities as designated by the leader to substitute for one or more of the above or as an additional requirement.

2) Halter and Showmanship
    Member will be scored on fit and condition of the horse showing at halter, ability to answer questions related to horse husbandry and/or activities as designated by the leader.

 

Unit 6

Similar to former unit 5B

1) Equitation
    Member to demonstrate the following:
    *     Haunches-in to lope/canter from halt.
    *     Advanced leg yield at walk and jog/trot.
    *     Counter canter on the rail and in a circle.
    *     Controlled gallop in both directions; English at hand gallop.
    *     Turn on forehand in both directions.
    *     Advanced stage of side-pass.
    *     Two track/half pass at walk and jog/trot.
    *     Turn on haunches at least six fluid crossovers in each direction.
    *     Flying lead changes.   
    *     Complete a pattern, including tack check, mount and dismount.
    *    Activities as designated by the leader to substitute for one or more of the above or as an additional requirement.
 
2) Halter and Showmanship
    Member will be scored on fit and condition of the horse showing at halter, ability to answer questions related to horse husbandry and/or activities as designated by the leader.
